Back in April, while doing a house-sit in Athens, we spontaneously decided that instead of going to Budapest for the summer months, we’d move to Las Vegas for 3 months.

Roll on a couple months, and we’ve already been living here for a month, with another 2 to go.

When we told people our plans to live in Vegas, they thought we were crazy. When we told them it was going to be during the hottest time of the year, they assumed we’d lost our minds.

This is our 5th time to visit Sin City, and we’ve been here during the summer months on all those other occasions so we knew what to expect from the intense heat.

Why we decided to move to Las Vegas for 3 months

Let me just preface by saying that we didn’t have to come ALL the way over here to do just have a base or to concentrate on work etc. We could have moved more or less anywhere.

1. It’s one of our favourite cities in the world

We’ve said it many times before, but this place just keeps drawing us back.

It’s been 7 long years since our last visit here in 2009, so we were getting withdrawal symptoms. For me personally, Vegas will always be a stand out location, because it’s where I first discovered my passion for travel back in 2005.

2. Have a base and chill out on travelling for a while

We spent the previous 5 months travelling consistently throughout every country in the Balkans. Apart from a house-sitting gig in Athens for a month, we were on the go non-stop. Jumping on buses almost daily for long periods of time gets extremely tiring.

We managed to tick off Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece, Albania, Macedonia, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia and Slovenia during that trip, so we were shattered by the time we got back to Ireland for 2 weeks at the end of it.

As you’ve probably already seen with our travels in the past, we like to mix things up with how fast/slow we go. Usually we go all out attack for a few months and then slow down….and get ourselves a base to chill out in.

3. Concentrate on work & create a new online business

Running an online business while travelling is something that we’ve managed to successfully do over the past 3 years.

We’ve wanted to show our readers that it’s totally possible to have a travel lifestyle AND make a full-time income at the same time.

Is it easy? No, because it takes a lot of hard work and behind the scenes effort to keep the chains oiled.

However, like anything in life – if you’re prepared to put the work in to achieve a specific goal then you’ll find a way of making it a reality. We wanted to make this work sooo bad.

Pulling-out our laptops on buses to catch up on work related emails during a long bus journey sounds exciting and adventurous.

And it is – don’t get me wrong.

However, not having a proper work routine or “normal” comforts like a bed that you sleep in for more than 2 nights before moving onto the next one can wear a little thin after prolonged periods.

Anyways, we’ve been looking to create a new online business for ourselves for over a year now. It’s something that we feel is a natural extension of the current business that we run.

4. The crazy heat

It’s been between 39 – 44 degrees celsius everyday so far since we arrived a month ago, with August set to be even higher on average.

We love intense dry, arid conditions and the Mojave desert doesn’t disappoint. A friend of ours out here – his name is Jason and he runs a Carpet cleaning Las Vegas business said that working during the summer months is the worst aspect of running a carpet cleaning business.

Sometimes it’s too hot to be outside for any length of time but come 4pm it’s a lot more bearable.

The guarantee of blue skies and a swimming pool outside our apartment is something we enjoy immensely.

5. Endless entertainment possibilities

This city has got everything – apart from a lake or beach, although lake Mead is only an hours drive away 🙂

Honestly, you can never get bored here. World class shows on your doorstep and where we’re staying is literally 1 mile away from the strip.

We went to see Garth Brooks in the T-mobile arena the first weekend we arrived as Florence had always wanted to see him in concert.

Not being a fan of country music myself, I have to say the it was a magnificent show. For a guy who’s touching 100 years of age – Brooks has some amount of energy in him!

We have a few other shows planned to take in over the new few months.

We also visited Madame Tussauds the other day for a few hours. The museum is located on Las Vegas Boulevard – right next to the Venetian hotel.

We spent 2 hours wandering around inspecting more than 100 wax replicas of various celebrities from Brad Pitt to Don King.

If you’ve been to a Madame Tussauds before then you’ll know what to expect.

The museum is split into different interactive rooms with categories like A-list actors, famous athletes, TV personalities and music artists. Madame Tussauds in Vegas is unique from all the other locations around the world because it has a room that pays homage to performers who have headlined in the city (past and present).

If you’re in town and you’ve never been to a Madame Tussauds before then it’s definitely worth checking out.

6. The surrounding sight seeing opportunities

Death Valley, The Grand Canyon and The Hoover Dam are just some of the road trips that you can do out here. We’ve done them before, but we’ll definitely be visiting them again before we leave.

There’s just so many things to see and do out here. Los Angeles is about a 5 hour drive and we’ll also be doing that road trip to check out Universal Studios in September for a few days.

7. To gamble a little

It would be disrespectful to come to Vegas without doing a little “gamblin”.

This is the gambling mecca of the world and to leave without at least putting a few bob on red or black at some stage just wouldn’t feel right!

We’ve played a bit of Pai Gow poker so far, and we’ll hit up a few $2/$4 limit hold’em tables soon enough to wipe away the cobwebs.

Being able to live in Vegas for a few months is something that I’ve personally wanted to do ever since I first came here and thankfully the time was ripe for it to happen now.

3 months is a long time in the desert but you can be sure that it won’t be the last time we’ll be here!
